The Closet: May Updates

Generosity creates a ripple effect that strengthens everyone involved. When individuals and organizations give—whether through donations, time, or resources—they help ensure that families facing hardship can meet basic needs like clothing and shoes for their children, restoring dignity and easing daily stress. For the community, this kind of support builds connection, compassion, and a shared sense of responsibility, making it more resilient and united. For the giver, generosity fosters purpose and fulfillment, turning empathy into meaningful action. And for the receiver, it offers not only practical relief but also hope, reminding them they are seen, valued, and not alone in their struggles.

We receive resources that we pray for when families are in the greatest need.

The mission of our St. Paul’s Closet received many generous monetary donations this past month: Steve and Jill Bruns, Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church, and the Bird Island Community Fund. These funds help purchase needed items that haven’t been donated; for example, shoes, boots, and personal care items. Westfield Dental delivered dental hygiene packs to be given to families in need. In the first two days, 18 packs were given out! Every family is so grateful. Wendy Wulkan donated new items that were much needed and appreciated so much. Swedlanda church collected winter items.

Weekly we receive clothing donations from individuals. Dorothy Johnson delivered beautiful quilts. St. Paul’s Caring and Sharing group with Linda Fosland compile newborn kits and towel sets. Our families love these sets. It indeed takes the generosity of our community to serve our neighbors in need. This past month, 45 families found help through the Closet mission. Furniture was picked up by the recipients from very generous donors including: beds, dressers, couches, end tables, and a high chair. Recipients pick up the items from the donors. It’s life changing for these families!

One day, a young woman showed me her new cross necklace and proudly told me that she had been baptized the past week. She told me how much she would like a rosary but they didn’t have funds to get one. I put the request out and a beautiful new rosary was delivered to our church. She was so joyful and thankful for this gift that she will cherish for life. Items needed at this time: men’s and women’s work boots, clean tennis shoes in all sizes, towels, hoodies, men’s jeans, electric fry pan or griddle, athletic T-shirts, pants, and shorts. Thank you for your generous and kind hearts! Together, we can make our community stronger.

In gratitude, Jill Schwiderski
